These are definitely on the small side, so you should carefully consider how your intended use jibes with the size. That said, if you are curious about pellet grills, this probably isn't a terrible place to start. Traeger's reputation is solid, and nothing is as convenient (especially for long cooks) or as versatile as a good pellet grill. I was a charcoal or nothing guy, but the Pit Boss I bought on clearance at Walmart (that's a hint!) has changed my life.

I saw this at home depot yesterday for this price. I didn't pull the trigger because it's kinda small. It looks like it wouldn't fit a large brisket

Is it not 22"? I have the Renegade Pro that's approximately this size and I fit a spatchcocked 25' turkey in there. I've also done a full packer brisket and I've also done 6 racks of ribs comfortably with a rib rack.

You'd be surprised what you can fit.

In terms of HD clearance price - what happens next? Another drop? When?

I have the pro 22. It's big enough for a 12 lbs turkey with room to spare on either side. Unless you're cooking like beyond 3 racks of ribs, or pulled pork for 8+ people, it'll be fine!

Wondering how this compares(size and quality) to the Lowe's Pit Boss 456 @ $189?

According to that thread, the Pit Boss grill is 23"x15.35". The Traeger lists 418 sq. in. If those numbers are correct, the Pit Boss is about 85% of the size of the Traeger at less than 50% of the price.

? not sure your math is right. I believe the pit boss is bigger at 456 sqft?

Always happy for someone to double-check, but the math is correct using the firebox (grill) dimensions of 23" x 13.5" = 353 sq in. The "456" in the Pit Boss name includes a 103 sq in "warming rack".

The Traeger lists 418 sq in as "primary cooking area", so the Pit Boss has about about 85% (353/418) of the cooking area. It's also more than 50% cheaper.

BTW, the measurements are in square inches, not sqft. You could cook a small elephant with a 456 sqft grill. Smilie

I'd buy the Pit Boss. Had one for years and never a problem. Great customer service! Pit Boss has the ability to sear as well. I'd use a Pit Boss again, but own a Green Mountain Grill now.

I don't have this. But I have a Green Mountain Grill Davey Crockett which has been amazing. I imagine the volume is similiar. I got an additional rack that sits on the other rack and increases the area. I'd recommend that as well. But. Have no problem smoking enough food for 10-12 people.

The Davy Crockett is great. It's small, but portable and runs off 12volts! I love mine and my Jim Bowie.
