Don't forget to use either Citi points ($15 off of $60) or AMEX points (20% off).
Free alternative:

Tax companies are known to lobby to make filing taxes a pain. Most people do not have particularly complex tax needs, and 70% of people in the US qualify for free tax preparation based on income. Below are some resources to avoid spending too much on your tax preparation. Feel free to copy/paste this info wherever relevant.

If you make less than $66,000 in Adjusted Gross Income you qualify for free tax preparation (looks like it's going to be $69,000 for the 2019 tax year).

The non-profit The United Way offers free tax preparation using H&R Block Deluxe. This allows you to file your Federal returns and create up to 3 state returns for free. The Deluxe version is a step up from H&R Block's most basic "free" offering. Check it out here:
https://www.myfreetaxes.com

Note: While you can produce your state return for free, you may not be able to e-file for free. If that is the case, you can certainly print and mail your return for the cost of postage. Many states also offer their own free e-file solutions. Here is some info on which states offer free e-filing:
https://www.mymoneyblog.com/free-...tates.html

Different H&R block versions for reference:

Forms supported by the Deluxe edition:

If for some reason you'd prefer not to use the United Way/H&R Block, the IRS has a list of free tax preparation websites here:
https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-f...s-for-free

If you need more assistance the IRS makes volunteers available to assist people in doing their returns through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, and they offer assistance to older adults through the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program. Find a location near you here:
https://www.irs.gov/individuals/f...volunteers

Many city and county office also have free tax preparation available to citizens at libraries and government offices throughout tax season. Check your local government website.

Can someone explain the point of purchasing the software versus just doing it online?
Download version is usually cheaper. Also some people are paranoid about their personal info

does the "5 free federal e-files" mean I can share this with 4 other people...? or does it put all of your filings under the same mint account so you could see each persons info, making this pretty useless unless trusted family?

Has anyone here have used FreeTaxUSA (if you've never heard of them, look them up, they are legit) but still went back to TurboTax?

Last year, for the first time, I heard about FreeTaxUSA from reddit (/r/personalfinance) and gave it a go. Interesting thing was that you can do taxes on turbotax and freetaxusa and compare the numbers before you pay. The numbers turned out to be exactly the same for me and ended up saving me $100 or so.

The catch with freetaxusa is that everything had to be entered in by hand so it'll take an extra 10 minutes longer.

I would recommend you give that a look if you have never heard of it. I thought it was one of those "free tax (if you make less than $x)" sites but no their system worked well for me (rental property, multiple states, stock).
If you have a complex tax situation with carry overs, I would strongly suggest you NOT switch tax programs unless you are prepared to review every page of your return along with last years return to verify all the information from last year carried over properly.

In case anyone is wondering, making less than 66k AGI is NOT the only deciding factor to being able to use Turbo Tax's no fee option. If you have more than $1,500 in interest income, they require you to purchase Turbo Tax Deluxe. I am just over the limit, because I had a lot of Bank Account bonuses...and they wanted me to pay for the upgrade. fark them!

EDIT: So I filed with H & R Block for free, Fed and State! FARK INTUIT!!!!!

Noob question, although it includes state, do you still pay extra to e-file the form?
