Free alternative:

Tax companies are known to lobby to make filing taxes a pain. Most people do not have particularly complex tax needs, and 70% of people in the US qualify for free tax preparation based on income. Below are some resources to avoid spending too much on your tax preparation. Feel free to copy/paste this info wherever relevant.

If you make less than $66,000 in Adjusted Gross Income you qualify for free tax preparation (looks like it's going to be $69,000 for the 2019 tax year).

The non-profit The United Way offers free tax preparation using H&R Block Deluxe. This allows you to file your Federal returns and create up to 3 state returns for free. The Deluxe version is a step up from H&R Block's most basic "free" offering. Check it out here:
https://www.myfreetaxes.com

Note: While you can produce your state return for free, you may not be able to e-file for free. If that is the case, you can certainly print and mail your return for the cost of postage. Many states also offer their own free e-file solutions. Here is some info on which states offer free e-filing:
https://www.mymoneyblog.com/free-...tates.html

Different H&R block versions for reference:

Forms supported by the Deluxe edition:

State

If for some reason you'd prefer not to use the United Way/H&R Block, the IRS has a list of free tax preparation websites here:
https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-f...s-for-free

If you need more assistance the IRS makes volunteers available to assist people in doing their returns through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, and they offer assistance to older adults through the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program. Find a location near you here:
https://www.irs.gov/individuals/f...volunteers

Many city and county office also have free tax preparation available to citizens at libraries and government offices throughout tax season. Check your local government website.

Im going to go with this deal as I am also a Quicken Premier (14 month license) user and Amazon has that at $39.99 and if you buy both Turbotax and Quicken you get an additional $20 off.

$62.94 after tax for both seems like a good enough deal!

Same price at Costco, right? Might as well wait this out a bit as I can always just go pick it up at Costco.

Wondering why pay for software when TurboTax is available online. I just don't have that many income sources so trying to understand.

FYI - look on Ebay, you'll find Quicken Premier being sold for $18-20 for the 14 month license.

besides price, is there a difference between buying the CD/download vs just using the turbo tax website to enter the info?

Costco was $10 more for Deluxe + State when I was there on the 24th.

Edit: I see Costco is dropping! nm

Yeah, useful. All these forms used to be free online but over the years TurboTax got greedy and started segmenting forms off into their own individual software forcing people to buy their overpriced software and services. Nice bait and switch they did
Thy did remove Schedule D from Deluxe one year a few years ago, but then responded to the outcry by giving everyone who bought Deluxe expecting to find Schedule D a free upgrade to Premier. As far as I know, you can actually access every form in forms mode in every version of Turbotax now. The difference is in the amount of help and support, and possibly Step-by-step available.

Deluxe *without* state is $29.99 at Costco.com. As far as I can tell, you can't get Deluxe with state at Costco, com, but almost certainly in store in states that have income tax. But I don't know what the price is. Costco will offer $10 off Turbotax starting 1/2/2020, but the price shown is $10 off $39.99, not $10 off the current price.

For 2018 taxes, I bought both, H&R and TurboTax

I withdrew my spouse's partial ROTH IRA. I had multiple porting with several investment firms. With H&R, first I ported and downloaded, joint non-IRA, my IRA and Roth. When I ported on my spouse's account, I couldn't "deselect" the joint non-IRA account. Thus, I had hundreds of duplicate entries. I tried several times but unsuccessful and gave up. TurboTax had that option and I didn't have any duplicate entries.
I dont trust H&R block either. Several years ago when I was living in NYC but working in NJ, I tried H&R block software to file my returns and it double counted my income at the state level because of the way it imported the W2s since I had tax withholdings for 2 states. I didnt have this issue with TurboTax.

I think the $10 off sale starts on the 2nd. It's in the current coupon booklet.

You still have to pay to efile if you use TurboTax online, which the Deluxe desktop version includes. Also, I've tried the online version and like the desktop version better. For a start, the online version didn't import as much info from last year's return as the desktop version, but the main thing is that you don't have Forms mode in the online version (correct me if I'm wrong because I only played with it briefly). I do most of my work in Forms mode.
