Of course there's science behind the idea.

I don't know about this book specifically, but there's a lot of research on the ability of consuming foods high in antioxidants to reduce oxidative stress, and thus lowering the risks of things like heart disease, diabetes, cancer, etc. Tbh I'd never buy a cookbook as it's incredibly easy to find whatever kinds of healthy recipes you want online, and if you want to increase the levels of antioxidants in your diet, just add/substitute in stuff like deep colored berries (blue, black, raspberries, etc) spinach, kale, artichoke, etc into the stuff you already cook.

Is Your Problem Inflammation?

If you have taken steps to be healthy but your diet and/or exercise program hasn't produced the results you want, there is a good
chance the reason is inflammation. Most of the health problems that
bring people into my office stem from inflammation caused by dietary imbalance. Once your body is trapped in an inflammatory cycle, you can no longer eliminate fat cells or transform them into
muscle. Inflammation is the wall that stands between you and the
body you want. If you want to get healthy and lose weight, you first
need to tear down that wall.
To appreciate how inflammation can promote weight gain and
other chronic diseases you have to know something about the role
of inflammation in your body.
In a healthy body, inflammation serves a useful purpose. When
you sprain your ankle, for instance, torn tissues trigger a cascade of
inflammatory responses that increase blood flow and cause visible
swelling. Beneath the distended skin lies a demolition zone where
inflammatory reactions are clearing out damaged parts to make
room for repairs that will ultimately rebuild your ankle joint. When
you catch a cold, viruses in your lymph nodes trigger inflammation
that gets them started making antibodies, and a sore throat and
stuffy nose are symptoms of the battle in your oral and upper airway passages. Normally, once the ankle sprain or cold has resolved, the inflammation subsides.
In the setting of dietary imbalance, however, inflammation
takes longer to go away—much longer. Because inflammation
blocks normal metabolic function and disturbs cellular growth, not
only will minor injuries and infections take longer to clear, serious
diseases like atherosclerosis and cancer are likely to develop.

From page 10 of http://drcate.com/wp-content/uplo...s-copy.pdf

and if you want to change the way you see diet and how quickly what you eat can change your genes check out Deep Nutrition by Dr. Catherine Shananhan it's super science-heavy (it's a 19hr audible listen or there's a 45 min summary on audible too) but it will change the way you see diet! ESPECIALLY if you are thinking of having children, there's life-changing science about birth order and genes and diet in there!

An example from the book is something as simple as removing 100% of the vitamin A from the diet of a pregnant pig, meant that entire litter was born without eyeballs, when the litter before and after that one (who were on a normal diet created healthy piglets). No vitamin A in the mother means there no need to express genes to create the rods and cones in the eyes of the piglets.

the first part of that just seems like the kind of crap Dr. Oz and wannabes like him would spout out without any scientific evidence.

kind of like the stay at home mom facebook rant about some non-fda approved supplement that no one will hear about 5 yrs from now

No -- I've worked in Regulatory Affairs for foods for about 10+ years, and I can tell you that while tiny pill-shaped Anti-Inflammatory "superfood supplements" are bullshit (a superfood supplement will never counterbalance eating a pizza)...... Anti-inflammatory foods (like meal sizes, regularly eating foods that are anti-inflammatory or just dont inflame your body to begin with) are really important. That said, the anti-inflammation MEDICINE that doctors give out are extremely important to take when issued.

Probably the most damage to the human body through diseases (other than direct mechanical damage, like a flesh eating bacteria or tooth decay etc), is the inflammation. This really messes with your organs and you don't recover from it.

What are inflammatory foods? Unfortunately its the really tasty stuff largely -- SUGAR mostly, most oils.. pepperonis, processed foods, alcohol, etc.

By the way -- anti-oxidant pills and vitamins are largely bullshit too -- but foods containing natural anti-oxidants aren't. And this has to do with the metabolic chains, and how your body registers their presence. Its a bit complicated, but since your body makes anti-oxidants, if you are consuming "bio-similars" but not exact and in high doses, then your body slows down in its production of the real stuff.

So again, whether anti-inflammatories or anti-oxidants, supplements are kinda bullshit unless you have an actual medically necessary deficit.

For anti-inflammatories, there is a reason why every doctor, every surgeon makes sure you're taking anti-inflammatories after surgeries, and in other health events. It can save your life big time.

So, yeah, I think for the most part supplements are are bs.

But LARGE SCALE CONSUMPTION of anti-inflammatory foods, and cutting out the bad stuff, will really help you keep going. This is probably one of the big things that contributes to some people looking old and jacked up vs. people who look young and fresh as well. Your body doesn't fight inflammation very well under stress and bad health etc. So combine that with a poor diet of highly inflammatory sugary drinks, sugary snacks, oily snacks -- alcohol -- and junk food, you basically get jacked.

Whereas those girls who starve themselves actually do it by eating salads and junk that just by coincidence also are anti-inflammatory. So they are hungry all the time, but they have nice skin and stuff because they actually end up eating anti-inflammatory foods in large scale and few inflammatory foods. So if they get stressed, physically, they are pretty good to go.

Truly the root cause of probably the majority of long-term damage in the body isn't really specific diseases of sicknesses, which typically can be cured, but the inflammation damage resulting from them, which ends up being permanent. This is true for the brain as well as all the major organs especially the heart and blood vessels, affecting eye sight, everything. What do you think sugar is doing in diabetics, you know? Its basically the inflammation, because their bodies can't control the levels and it gets so high.

Funny, I had a few surgeries done (real ones, not just wisdom teeth getting pulled) and wasn't given anti-inflammatories. What fictitious nation-state do you live in?

please explain the scientific metabolic break-up of pizza (bread, cheese, sauce) and its role in inflammation.

It's far easier to start by defining what is not natural. Most of us
agree that when we talk about highly processed foods we've moved
into the realm of the unnatural. Now the question becomes How do
we identify those foods that are highly processed? Here's where the
label can work for us. Processed foods are easily identified by any
of these three ingredients: Vegetable oil, sugar, and MSG. Either
ingredient appearing alone is cause for alarm. If all three show up
together on the same label, then you can be sure you are looking at
a highly processed, very unnatural, and very unhealthy food product. Put it down and back away slowly.

The easiest way is to cook your own food, stay away from processed food. Lots of veggies, proteins and fruits. Half the job is done ! Stop being lazy and making excuses.
