FYI to those interested who do not care about the possibility of mold under the brush head (it's really easily avoidable by cleaning inside with any regularity or just leaving the head off to dry after brushing).

This is a YMMV, but Walmart sells the Philips Sonicare Elite in a Sonicare Essence box for $5 more than this post. Here's a link to my post about it a few months ago. Nobody seemed interested, but if you're here looking at the Sonicare Essence on Amazon, this may be worth giving a try to score a Sonicare Elite.

YMMV - Walmart - Philips Sonicare Elite Toothbrush (Discontinued) in Sonicare Essence Box $24.97

I have never had a serious problem with mold/gunk under my Essence brush head. Yes, there is a small amount of yellowish-brown crud under there, which I clean out when I replace the brush head every 3 to 6 months. Then again, I don't let much toothpaste/saliva escape my mouth while brushing and after I'm done brushing and have rinsed the brush head, I let it run out in open air for maybe five seconds to help vibrate off most of any remaining water left in the brush head.

I've used this model for more than 10 years and so far have no reason to switch. I buy genuine heads for it as I've used Target's "Up" brand ones one time and they were horrible.

All I do is after brushing remove the head and rinse it and leave it for air dry ....put the handle without the brush back into charging ...no issues for the past 9 years ...still on my first set ...both working

If you have a metal rack in your bathroom you can have your brush head snap on to it for drying ...I used to do this in my previous bath

Is the brush head easy to break? I have used a Philips electric toothbrush before, and the brush head broke in less than a month.

Been using sonicare for almost 20 years now. I have gone through at least five handles. The essence is my favorite handle for its stronger vibration and generally quieter nature versus the series 2.

To top it off, in terms of 1st party heads, costco actually charges less for the essence heads (you get 8 per box, versus just six for the series 2/diamondclean, etc). Despite it being more metal, plastic, and magnets, it is cheaper.

Also used my share of generic heads, and the really good ones cost only SOMEWHAT less than 1st party heads...sonimart, for example. Cleaning power even with the cheapo heads isnt bad, but expect them to need replacement very quickly.

Purchased the fairywill handle a few days ago. Will do a head to head soon.
How much does Costco sell the heads for?

If you unscrew it after every use, the internals will dry out and not get moldy. Also, do an internal cleaning once a month and you won't have any problem.

Gullible SD'ers. Which, judging from some of the replies here, there's no shortage of.

Usually $39.99 when costco has a coupon (frequently)

This is the worse design of all the Sonicare electric toothbrush offerings. Get yourself a different one. This crap gets disgusting after a while due to mold.

The newer designed versions are much slimmer and you can find tons of head replacement companies on Amazon if you do not want to buy the official ones.

I unscrew and run the battery base and brush head under tap water every cleaning. Been using this brush for 3 years. Never had a single mold issue.

Good Brush, been using it for about 2+ years now. Amazon has affordable sonimart replacement heads. Quality of brushing is really good and does not hurt gums or weaken teeth. Mold development can be controlled and stopped if one actually cleans the toothbrush every time they change the head.
