That's a separate program with Chase. You earned UR pts, which is also great but different than what we're discussing here. In this case, you're earning Southwest Airline points. In order to receive a Companion pass, you'll need to earn 125K points in a calendar year to get it.

The easiest way to do it is to sign up for the Chase Southwest Performance Business card (70K bonus after 5K spend in 3 months) + this Plus card (40K points after 1K spend + additional 35K pts with 4K spend in 6 months)

In total, if you hit both, you'll have 70K + 5K + 40K + 1K + 35K + 4K. That will 155K pts, which is more than enough.

You can't do 2 personal, they did away with that back around 2018. If you want to accrue using CC points you have to apply for a business and a personal card. The personal card also has the following restrictions:

1) If you already have any SW personal card, you can't get a 2nd one even if it's a different kind of personal card (e.g., you currently own plus, you get a premier)
2) If you earned a bonus award anytime in the past 24 months for ANY of the southwest family of rapid rewards cards you can't get a 2nd one even if that card is closed.

This means you have to wait 24 months from when you got the bonus, not when you applied for the card. So if you applied in Jan 2018 for Plus and got the 50K or whatever bonus award at the time posted on your statement March 2018 you can't get a 2nd personal card until after March 2020 which is after 24 months of receiving the award.

What I am not sure of is if the actual day comes into play. Say you applied Jan 1, 2018 can you apply on March 2, 2020 or do you have to wait until April 2020? If someone knows for sure they can chime in.

I did this back in 2018 and planning to do this again. I applied for a Plus card on 1/18/18 and then the Business card several days later after I received confirmation of approval and got approved for both. The reason was I wanted to make sure I was approved for the first before getting the 2nd. Both are subject to 5/24 however my understanding is that only the personal cards count towards 5/24, applying for a business card does not count toward 5/24. However if you are over 5/24 you likely won't get approved for the business card.

Say you closed your Plus card on December 2019, you may not be able to apply for a Premier on January 2020 as I've read it can take up to 60 days for closure status to be fully processed. So if you are done with the card it's best to close ASAP.

and remember ... companion pass is 125,000 points now. So you need a 50K card and a 70K card plus spend in most cases.

Dang just got the 50K bonus one from in flight deal last week, $2K spend. But I also got the 70K business card same time, $5K spend.

So looks like another two years (almost) of companion pass for me!

I heard that you can contact Chase (e.g. Secure message them and request that they match the current offer), so you can get an extra 25K points.

Thanks I think I will do just that ... but another $4K spend if I do though.

This card and the Performance Biz card. I don't think they allow 2 personal cards for companion. Get a referral for this card and split the bonus with referrer for even better deal. 😉

Just earned Companion myself with these 2 cards.

Yes, once you earn it, you get it for the rest of that calendar year plus one more.

Really good sign up bonus for this card. I was happy to get the 50k in flight offer last year. Referral bonus is 10k and you can do up to 5 per year. Can work out nice if your referrer shares!

I'm pretty sure they killed the one this AM since it was a referral link from TPG. At the time, it was only available via referrals, but now it shows up on Southwest's homepage.

The way to go is to get a referral if the bonus is the same and have referrer split bonus. That what I did when I signed up for the Chase Ink Biz Preferrred, covered my annual fee.
