DEAD AS OF JAN 19 11:59 PM CST

Just saw this posted on DD and figured id share. If used properly this should save you some serious money.

Like last year SW has currently an unadvertised offer where you can change any flight booked for travel between the dates of 4/14-6/6 to another flight within +/-14 days for free. Southwest never charges change fees, but currently they will also waive the fare difference. You can essentially book a cheap flight around your dates of travel and then switch to a more expensive date of choice for absolutely free, no change fee or difference fee.

For example I made a test booking from LGA to New Orleans and was able to book an $106 flight and change for free onto a $426 flight.

NOTES:
  • Works with points or cash
  • Should work with companion passes as well but YMMV. CP addition seems to work on mobile app but desktop is glitchy.
  • You can do the changeover immediately after booking your reservation
  • Works for international destinations as well
  • Origin and destination needs to be the same. Exception is that if you have multiple home airports then you are able to take advantage of substituting a different home airport
  • Length of travel can be changed
  • 24 hrs free cancellation that can be refunded if you end up goofing this but some readers are posting that it might be hard to get a straight refund once the change is processed and the only option is credit back so YMMV on this depending on who you talk to
  • I have personally been able to make 2 changes to my itinerary without being charged a fee. Not sure what the max number of changes allowed are
  • Expiration unknown so book soon if you have any upcoming plans

Where'd you hear about this?
Link to actual terms?
did not immediately see it at least on mobile site

Southwest always has no change fee, but usually have to pay different between your flight when you paid to whatever the new flight costs at the time of the change.

Seems useful if you can book cheaper day/red eye flight and then swap to more prime/weekend etc. But haven't heArd of this before outside of natural disasters like a storm

Seems like this is only if your original flight was booked on a Max 8. Unfortunately, my flight got moved up 2 hours and there's nothing really better.

This is stellar. Worked for my PDX-Las flight on memorial day weekend. Got to change the cheap Saturday flight to the expensive flight Friday for free. Thank you!

Thanks, I have to use 3 nights in Vegas by the end of May. I already booked the cheapest flights with points and changed them to the most convenient nonstop ones for the last weekend. If the hotel lets me use the voucher for Memorial Day weekend (long shot but who knows), then I'll change it again. Thx OP!!!

Same destination only or can you book a $49 flight nearby and switch it to Hawaii?
For me it told me I could change to a nearby DC/Baltimore Airport but the destination had to be Las Vegas

Dates from 4/14-6/6 should work on most routes for free changes. Free changes will be allowed within 2 weeks of your eligible flight.

Does this work for roundtrip flights? And for flights of different length? (i. e. 4 days instead of 2 days)
