Great on ink. Cheap after market inks. I'm in the business and I have two at home and two in my office. For monochrome--a cheap laser printer is much more economical. At $46 if you don't like it, throw it away after you've used the ink--you got your moneys worth. Replacement ink runs $2-4 per cartridge.

NOT TRUE. You can EASILY tell the printer driver to print using black ink only when that happens.

I have read many posts about firmware updates that keep generic ink from working. Any problems with this model not working with the generics?
Please comment.

These suck with Ink, they get dried up and B&W doesn't work when other colors are out.

I have a very similar model I got on here for 40$ about a year ago, and I say go for it guys. Ink on these are typically dirt cheap if you don't mind generic via eBay or amazon. Bought 15$ worth of ink over a year ago. Still not finished with it and I print coupons, shipping labels etc regularly.

I have a one generation older Brother inkjet (MFC-J485DW). These seem to get discontinued fairly quickly. I have not had to update the firmware. No reason to if you never have issues. The generic ink I bought works excellent. Bought a lot and haven't gone through that much, but seem to print a lot. The ebay seller I bought from is listed below. Here is the GENERIC MFC-J497DW ink cartridge listings for various pack sizes and prices on this model;
